The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust – Paediatric unit

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is a designated Specialist Commissioning Centre for autoimmune rheumatic disease and vasculitis (AIRDVas), Primary Immunodeficiencies (PIO) and Systemic autoinflammatory disorders (SAID).

This reference centre also has a dedicated clinical estate including day care facilities, specialist pharmacist, allied health and administrative support. The unit provides a specialised clinical service for the diagnosis and management of a range of rare autoimmune disorders. Weekly multidisciplinary clinics are held, with input from Neurology, Respiratory Medicine, Immunology, Renal Medicine and Dermatology. Specialist inpatient beds are available with access to a full range of acute services. Complex patients from Yorkshire & Humber region are referred to us for ongoing management/access to clinical trials.

The care of patients with SAID is provided by a combined immunology / rheumatology service. The unit provides a supra-regional service and is responsible for the diagnosis and management of patients with a range of genetically defined conditions such as TRAPS, FMF and MVK deficiency. This centre also has a large cohort of patients with AOSD, Behcet’s disease and other genetically undefined systemic autoinflammatory disorders. The day case unit provides facilities for the administration of all biological therapies.

The PID unit provides a specialised service for the diagnosis and management of a range of rare primary immunodeficiencies including antibody, complement, phagocyte and cellular deficiencies. In addition, the unit is responsible for the on-going management of over one 100 adults with primary antibody deficiency, and is a recognised home therapy centre. All patients have access to full range of acute and specialist services provided by LTHT.

There are paediatric and transitional care arrangements across all 3 disease areas with dedicated combined clinics. The combined PID clinic takes place on a monthly basis. Both medical and nursing input is provided.

There is extensive and ongoing engagement with various patients’ organizations across all RITA themes. 

A comprehensive diagnostic support including genetic testing is provided for all services.
