Today, 28 February, marks Rare Disease Day, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness of rare diseases and the challenges faced by those living with them. Established in 2008 by EURORDIS and rare disease organisations worldwide, this day highlights the importance of research, collaboration, and policy improvements to ensure better access to diagnosis, treatment, and care for the millions of people affected by rare diseases. ERN RITA: A Collaborative Approach to Rare Disease Care
Rare diseases require specialised knowledge and expertise that are often not available in a single country. That’s why the European Commission created European Reference Networks (ERNs)—virtual networks connecting healthcare providers across Europe to facilitate knowledge-sharing and improve care for patients with complex and rare conditions.
ERN RITA (European Reference Network for Rare Immunological, Autoimmune, and Autoinflammatory Diseases) is one of these networks, dedicated to supporting patients with rare diseases that affect the immune system. By bringing together leading experts and hospitals across Europe, ERN RITA enhances patient care through collaboration, research, and innovation.
How ERN RITA Supports Patients with Rare Diseases
🔹 Improving Diagnosis – Many rare diseases remain undiagnosed for years. ERN RITA facilitates expert discussions and case reviews across borders to shorten diagnostic delays and provide more accurate assessments.
🔹 Enhancing Treatment – Through shared expertise and clinical guidelines, we help ensure that rare disease patients receive the best possible treatment, regardless of where they live in Europe.
🔹 Fostering Research & Innovation – ERN RITA actively contributes to scientific advancements, supporting research that leads to new therapies and better understanding of rare immunological, autoimmune, and autoinflammatory diseases.
🔹 Empowering Patients & Healthcare Professionals – We work closely with patient organisations and medical professionals to provide education, resources, and support networks to improve quality of life for those affected.
Rare Patients. Rare Experts. Real Outcomes.
On Rare Disease Day, we reaffirm our commitment to improving the lives of patients with rare diseases. Through collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and innovation, ERN RITA continues to work towards a future where every rare disease patient receives timely diagnosis and effective care.
